Google Play guide

A privacy policy URL for Google Play.

Google Play requires a privacy policy for every app, including apps that don’t collect personal data. It has to be a live, public web page, not a PDF.

What Google requires

Google’s User Data policy says that “apps that do not access any personal and sensitive user data must still submit a privacy policy.” The policy must be:

  • On an active, publicly accessible, non-geofenced URL. PDFs aren’t accepted.
  • Clearly labeled as a privacy policy.
  • Tied to the developer or app named on your Google Play listing.
  • Specific about the data your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares, and who it’s shared with.
  • Clear about how long you keep data, how it’s deleted, and how people can contact you about privacy.

You also need to link the policy inside your app.

Why Google says your policy is invalid

An “Invalid privacy policy” warning usually means Google’s check couldn’t open or recognize the page:

  • The link is a PDF, a file download, or a shared document.
  • The page needs a login, is blocked in some countries, or doesn’t load.
  • The page is a homepage or app listing rather than a privacy policy.
  • The policy doesn’t mention your app or your developer name.

How to publish it with AppLinks

  1. Publish your policy

Enter your app name and description on the AppLinks homepage, create an account, and paste your policy. The page is titled “Privacy policy”, shows your app’s name, and lists your support email as a privacy contact.

  2. Add it in Play Console

Open your app in Google Play Console, go to App content, then Privacy policy, and paste your URL, such as https://your-app.applinks.online/privacy. Save, and use the same URL inside your app.

  3. Use one URL for both stores

The same page works as your App Store privacy policy URL. Add your Google Play link in the editor and it shows on your support page too.

Does your app have accounts?

Google Play also asks apps with user accounts for a web page where people can request account deletion. See the account deletion URL guide.
